Landfill

Compost is an organic matter that is created by combining organic wastes, such as waste food, yard trimmings, and manure. The benefits of compost include building healthy soil, conserving water, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and saving money.

Recycling is the process of collecting and processing materials that would otherwise be thrown away as trash and turning them into new products. Recycling is not only beneficial to the environment but it also aids the economy.

Landfill waste is a site where trash is buried and slowly decomposes, depending on the lifespan of waste. Landfill wastes give off landfill gases and leachate which is both harmful for the groundwater as well as the air.

WHAT IS TRASH DIVERSION?

Trash diversion is the amount of waste one diverts from the landfill. To improve CSU Monterey Bay's waste diversion rate the school has placed a recycling and composting bins throughout the school. Composting and recycling are alternatives to sending our waste to landfills.

5 R's of zero waste

5 R's of Zero Waste

There are other ways to divert trash from landfills, and that is by following the 5 R's process.

Refuse

Say no to disposables. The more we accept things that will inevitably end up in landfills, the more demand we generate for those unsustainable things

Reduce

Reduce your overall consumption and give your things a second life. Simplify your life and donate things that you do not need.

Reuse

Stop buying disposable and start buying reusable. Do not throw out that jar of jelly, make it into a cup!

Recycle

After you have refused, reduced, and reused there shouldn’t be much left to recycle. Still, make sure to separate your trash so that those resources can be reused instead of filling our landfills.

Rot

Don’t just throw your kitchen scraps away! Get a worm bin and let those little fellows turn your waste into high-quality fertilizer!

The graph to the left shows the tonnage of materials that were diverted from the landfill in comparison to the student population over the years. This graph shows good news. The student population is going up, but our compost, donations, and reuse are on the rise. The materials scale is the "Y" axis, while the year is the "X" axis. The white bars represent the student population, the grey bar represents materials reused, orange represents materials donated, and the green represents compost.
